my father was all over her察trying to calm her down。 It
was no use。 She basically dissolved right there on the spot。
Lyta threw her napkin down and muttered察 This family is a joke察院and took off。 Then my
mother bolted out of the room察sobbing into her hands察
and my father raced after her察throwing my grandfather the wickedest look I'd ever seen。
That left Granddad and me and a table full of cold food。 ^Wow察院I finally said。 ^I had no idea。 ̄
^You still don't察院he told me。
^What do you mean拭院
He sat there like granite for a minute察then leaned across the table toward me and said察 Why
do you suppose that upset your mother so much拭院
^I´I don't know。 ̄ I gave a halfhearted grin and said察 Because she's female拭院
He smiled察but just barely。 ^No。 She's upset because she knows that she could very well be
standing in Mr。 Baker's shoes right now。 ̄
I thought about it a minute and finally asked察 Did her brother have the cord around his neck
when he was born拭院
He shook his head。
^Well察then ´ ̄
He leaned forward even farther and whispered察 You did。 ̄
^I did拭院
He nodded。 ^Twice。 ̄
^But ´ ̄
^The doctor who delivered you was on the ball察plus apparently there was some slack in the
cord察so he was able to loop it off as you came out。
´´´ Page 42´´´
You didn't hang yourself ing into the world察but it could very easily have gone the other
way。 ̄
If I'd been told years or even weeks ago that I'd e down the chute noosed and ready to
hang察I'd have made some kind of joke about it察or
more likely I'd have said察Yeah察that's nice察now can you spare me the discussion拭
But after everything that had happened察I was really freaking out察and I couldn't escape the
questions tidal´waving my brain。 Where would I be if
things had been different拭What would they have done with me拭From the way my dad was
talking察he wouldn't have had much use for me察that's for
sure。 He'd have stuck me in a nuthouse somewhere察any where察and forgotten about me。 But
then I thought察No I'm his kid。 He wouldn't do that ´
would he拭
I looked around at everything we had ! the big house察the white carpet察the antiques and
artwork and stuff that was everywhere。 Would they have
given up all the stuff to make my life more pleasant拭
I doubted it察and man察I doubted it big´time。 I'd have been an embarrassment。 Something to
try to forget about。 How things looked had always
been a biggie to my parents。 Especially to my dad。
Very quietly my granddad said察 You can't dwell on what might have been察Bryce。 ̄ Then察like
he could read my mind察he added察 And it's not fair to
condemn him for something he hasn't done。 ̄
I nodded and tried to get a grip察but I wasn't doing a very good job of it。 Then he said察 By the
way察I appreciated your ment before。 ̄
^What拭院I asked察but my throat was feeling all pinched and swollen。
^About your grandmother。 How did you know that拭院
I shook my head and said察 Juli told me。 ̄
^Oh拭You spoke with her察then拭院
^Yeah。 Actually察I apologized to her。 ̄
^Well´ 院
^And I was feeling a lot better about everything察but now ´ God察I feel like such a jerk again。 ̄
^Don't。 You apologized察and that's what matters。 ̄ He stood up and said察 Say察I'm in the
mood for a walk。 Want to join me拭院
Go for a walk拭What I wanted to do was go to my room察lock the door察and be left alone。
^I find it really helps to clear the mind察院he said察and that's when I realized that this wasn't just
a walk ! this was an invitation to do something
together。
I stood up and said察 Yeah。 Let's get out of here。 ̄
For a guy who'd only basically ever said Pass the salt to me察my granddad turned out to be a
real talker。 We walked our neighborhood and the
next neighborhood and the next neighborhood察and not only did I find out that my granddad
knows a lot of stuff察I found out that the guy is funny。 In a
subtle kind of dry way。 It's the stuff he says察plus the way he says it。 It's really察I don't know察
cool。
As we were winding back into our own territory察we passed by the house that's going up
where the sycamore tree used to be。 My granddad
stopped察looked up into the night察and said察 It must've been a spectacular view。 ̄
I looked up察too察and noticed for the first time that night that you could see the stars。 ^Did you
ever see her up there拭院I asked him。
^Your mother pointed her out to me one time as we drove by。 It scared me to see her up so
high察but after I read the article I understood why she
did it。 ̄ He shook his head。 ^The tree's gone察but she's still got the spark it gave her。 Know
what I mean拭院
Luckily I didn't have to answer。 He just grinned and said察 Some of us get dipped in flat察some
in satin察some in gloss´。 ̄ He turned to me。 ^But
´´´ Page 43´´´
every once in a while you find someone who's iridescent察and when you do察nothing will ever
pare。 ̄
As we walked up to our front porch察my grandfather put his arm around my shoulder and said察
^It was nice walking with you察Bryce。 I enjoyed
myself very much。 ̄
^Me too察院I told him察and we went inside。
Right away we knew we'd stepped into a war zone。 And even though no one was yelling or
crying察from the look on my parents' faces I could tell
there'd been a major meltdown while my granddad and I were out。
Granddad whispered to me察 I've got another fence to mend察I'm afraid察院and headed into the
dining room to talk to my parents。
I wanted nothing to do with that vibe。 I went straight to my room察closed the door察and flopped
through the darkness onto my bed。
I lay there awhile and let the dinner disaster play through my mind。 And when I'd totally
burned a fuse thinking about it察I sat up and looked out the
window。 There was a light on somewhere inside the Bakers' house and the streetlights were
glowing察but the night still seemed really dense。 Like it
was darker than usual and察I don't know察heavy。
I leaned closer to the window and looked up into the sky察but I couldn't see the stars anymore。
I wondered if Juli had ever been in the sycamore at
night。 Among the stars。
I shook my head。 Flat察glossy察iridescent。 What was up with that拭Juli Baker had always
seemed just plain dusty to me。
I snapped on my desk lamp and dug the newspaper with the article about Juli out of the
drawer where I'd tossed it。
Just like I thought ! they made it sound like Juli was trying to save Mount Rushmore or
something。 They called her a ^strong voice in an urban
wilderness ̄ and ^a radiant beacon察shedding light on the need to curtail continued
overdevelopment of our once quaint and tranquil munity。 ̄
Spare me。 I mean察what's wrong with letting a guy cut down a tree on his own property so he
can build a house拭His lot察his tree察his decision。
End of story。 The piece in the paper was gag´me gush。
Except。 Except for the places aybe it was just in contrast to the
reporter's slant or something察but Juli's parts didn't e
off oh´woe´is´me like I was expecting。 They were察I don't know察deep。 Sitting in that tree was
seriously philosophical to her。
And the odd thing is察it all made sense to me。 She talked about what it felt like to be up in that
tree察and how it察like察transcended dimensional
space。 ^To be held above the earth and brushed by the wind察院she said察 it's like your heart
has been kissed by beauty。 ̄ Who in junior high do you
know that would put together a sentence like that拭None of my friends察that's for sure。
There was other stuff察too察like how something can be so much more than the parts it took to
make it察and why people need things around them
that lift them above their lives and make them feel the miracle of living。
I wound up reading and re´reading her parts察wondering when in the world she started
thinking like that。 I mean察no kidding察Juli Baker's smart察but
this was something way beyond straight A's。
A month ago if I'd read this article察I would have chucked it in the trash as plete garbage察
but for some reason it made sense to me now。 A lot
of sense。
A month ago I also wouldn't have paid any attention to the picture of Juli察but now I found
myself staring at it。 Not the one of the whole scene !
that was more emergency rescue equipment than Juli。 The other one察on the bottom half of
the page。 Someone must've used a killer telephoto lens察
´´´ Page 44´´´
because you can tell that she's in the tree察but it's mostly from the shoulders up。 She's
looking off into the distance and the wind is blowing her hair
back like she's at the helm of a ship or something察sailing into the sun。
I'd spent so many years avoiding Juli Baker that I'd never really looked at her察and now all of
a sudden I couldn't stop。 This weird feeling started
taking over the pit of my stomach察and I didn't like it。 Not one bit。 To tell you the truth察it
scared the Sheetrock out of me。
I buried the paper under my pillow and tried to remind myself of what a pain Juli Baker was。
But my mind started to wander again察and pretty soon
I had that stupid paper out from under my pillow。
This was insane What was I doing拭
I made myself shut out the light and go to bed。 I was slipping察man察and it was definitely time
to get a grip。
The Yard
I'd never been embarrassed by where we lived before。 I'd never looked at our house察or even
our side of the street察and said察Oh I wish we lived in
the new development!those houses are so much newer察so much better This is where I'd
grown up。 This was my home。
I was aware of the yard察sure。 My mother had grumbled about it for years。 But it was a low
grumbling察not worthy of deep concern。 Or so I'd
supposed。 But maybe I should have wondered。 Why let the outside go and keep the inside
so nice拭It was spotless inside our house。 Except for the
boys' room察that is。 Mom gave up on that after she discovered the snake。 If they were old
enough to adopt a snake察she told my brothers察they were
old enough to clean their own room。 Matt and Mike translated this to keep the door closed察
and became quite diligent about doing just that。
Besides the yard察I also never really wondered about the money察or the apparent lack thereof。
I knew we weren't rich察but I didn't feel like I was
missing anything。 Anything you could buy察anyway。
Matt and Mike did ask for things a lot察but even though my mother would tell them察No察boys察
we just can't afford that察I took this to mean察No察boys察
you don't deserve that察or察No察boys察you don't really need that。 It wasn't until Bryce called
our home a plete dive that I started really seeing
things。
It wasn't just the yard。 It was my dad's truck察my mother's car察the fami
